Priority Campaign Area: Biodiversity & Habitats

This is one in a series introducing ANS’ new Conservation Advocacy Priority Campaign Areas.

Since 1897, ANS has worked to protect the habitats and wildlife of the Washington, DC, region. The stream valley corridors that knit our region together with ribbons of blue and green space are critically important in protecting clean drinking water, habitat for fish, birds, insects, and amphibians, and migratory corridors for our wildlife. We also are stewards of two nature sanctuaries: Rust Sanctuary in Leesburg, VA, and Woodend Sanctuary in Chevy Chase, MD, which we are actively working to restore. Protecting and enhancing these natural spaces will always remain a high priority.

In addition, we will work to identify and protect those most important ecological places throughout our region—both those intertwined with people and developed spaces, and those larger or more intact. We will use science-based advocacy in support of regional clean water, particularly our creeks and streams, the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay. And, we will emphasize resilience, connectivity, and networks of habitats in order to give our native wildlife the best possible chance in the face of a changing climate.
